In the wake of Hurricane Irma, devastation is effecting thousands of people. Compassion for other people is needed during these trying times especially now when those who are affected are going to start rebuilding their lives again.
Time and again, the world surprises us with people who go out of the way to lift others up in times of trouble and difficulties. It’s a beautiful thing to see genuine hearts impacting their local communities.
This time, compassion comes in the presence of a humble 9-year-old boy from Alabama.
Noticing that the car in front of them at a local Chick-fil-A had a Florida license plate, Landon Routzong and his mother Tara figured they were in line behind hurricane Irma evacuees. Landon quickly asked his mother if he could pay for their meal and she agreed without hesitation. When interviewed, the little boy said:
“I didn’t want them to waste their money on food because they’re trying to escape the hurricane. I felt like I should help out.”
Landon approached the gentleman in the car and asked if he could pay for the man’s meal. The man, who was in fact evacuating from Miami, accepted Landon’s offer. After receiving his order pulled over to thank Landon and his family.
Overwhelmed and proud of her son’s simple but hugely inspiring gesture, Tara was nearly brought to tears.
“I told him we hoped he returned to his house untouched and that we’d keep him in our thoughts,” she wrote on her Facebook and added, “Landon and I both had tears in our eyes from how appreciative he was.”
Paying it forward.
Ultimately, we can learn a lot from Landon and his genuine heart. At just 9 years old he felt compelled to help and give back. We’ve learned that even the smallest gestures are greatly appreciated.
